Smoke in the Car

About the time Robert was born, Arleen’s old car broke down, so we went and bought a 1934 Ford. It was quite an old car, but felt almost new. When Robert was born, he was born on August the 2nd, the same day my grandpa, Axel Johnson. We decided to go down to show Grandpa Axel our new son and the new car. So we drove down to Grandpa’s, and said to Grandpa, “Grandpa, here’s Robert, he was born on your birthday”. The smart alec he was, he replied, “Oh good. Now Bob, you go home and get a lot of rest, so you can have some more babies for me. Of course Arleen, who always had a hard time in labor and was just out of the hospital, was standing there.
Then we asked him, “Would you like to go for a ride in our car?” “Yes I would! I would quite like to go for a ride in your car”. Arleen was sitting in the back, and Grandpa got up in front with me. Arleen never did like cigarette smoke, so we never ever let people smoke in the cars. As soon as we got in that car, Grandpa pulled a big cigar out of his shirt pocket, and lit it up. But this time, nobody said a word. Grandma opened her window in the back, but nobody wanted to say a word to Grandpa about his smoking. He’s the only one we ever let smoke in the car.
